Special Education Teacher (FT or PT - can do a job share)

Position Summary:

Under general supervision of the Education Director, plans and implements an instructional program that provides related educational services for students with severe emotional and behavioral disabilities  Manages student behavior, assesses and evaluates student achievement, and modifies instructional activities, as required; carries out a variety of student monitoring and controls activities; performs related duties as required or assigned.  Positions covered by this specification serve general education or special education classrooms.  Classes taught may be single or multi-grade level, subject, skill or specialty oriented.  Greater than average monitoring is required to protects the health and safety of clients while providing academic instruction and managing client's behaviors.  Reads and implements each client's individualized treatment plan, IEP, and 504 Plan.  Plans programming and is an active team member in carrying out treatment goals.  Participates as a member of the Multi-Disciplinary Team and maintains a team environment.

Essential Responsibilities:  

  1. Completes and documents teacher administered assessment.  Consistently reassesses for changes in the client's educational status or needs.
  2. Makes recommendations based upon assessment data.  Evaluates academic proficiency and determines appropriate academic curriculum for student based upon assessment data, age, strengths, and special needs.
  3. Is an active participant in the Treatment Team.
  4. Independently develops individualized and educationally appropriate goals and objectives for IEPs in all areas.  Develops individualized behavior plans and transition plans according to DOE guidelines.
  5. Reinforces appropriate academic and pro-social behavior.
  6. Delivers instruction designed to meet goals and objectives of IEPs and treatment plans.  Consistently incorporates technology into structured lesson plans.  Utilizes appropriate curricular and classroom modifications and accommodations.
  7. Completes report cards according to set schedule.
  8. Maintains a safe, clean, and neat classroom environment, recognizes potential risks and threats to safety within the therapeutic classroom environment.
  9. Demonstrates and ability to engage direct care staff in classroom activities and classroom management.
  10. Structures and manages the classroom environment to promote safety and productivity. Teaches students to make decisions and role models appropriate behavior for them.
  11. Intervenes in escalating behaviors and utilizes de-escalation techniques; demonstrates knowledge of guidelines regarding behavioral interventions (quiet time, restraint, elopement).
  12. May supervise paraprofessional or direct care staff.
  13. Carries out other duties as assigned to meet the needs of the program.

Minimum Requirements:


  • Minimum of BA/BS from an accredited college.
  • Candidates Must have an active Virginia provisional or renewable license special education endorsement.
  • Preference given to Master’s Level candidates and dually certified applicants in both  Special Education and General Education.

Training and Experience:
  • A minimum of one year of teaching experience preferably in a residential treatment setting.
  • Must have a working knowledge of Standards of Learning requirements, established by the VDOE.
  • Must participate in a minimum of 15 hours annually of in-service training applicable to specific job duties and responsibilities, and requisite VDOE annual professional development, including collegiate coursework necessary to maintain licensure.
  • Possess a current certificate for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid preferred.
  • Possess a valid Driver’s License.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a criminal background investigation.
  • Must complete a pre-employment physical.
  • Required to remain current on all mandatory annual retraining and in services

Situated on 270-acres of naturally lush and inviting land in Lignum, Virginia, the Childhelp Alice C. Tyler Village (the Village) has been providing a healing home environment for severely abused, neglected, and at-risk children since 1993.  Producing a true community atmosphere, the Village houses as many as 67 children ranging in age from 5 to 14 years old.  The residents live in small cottages and are grouped by age and treatment needs.  The children who make their home at the village are referred to this place of healing by various judicial authorities and child welfare offices after the Department of Social Services takes custody of them.  They arrive experiencing severe behavioral and emotional problems as a result of their previous abusive or neglectful situations.  For many of these children, the Village and its multidisciplinary team (MDT) are their last hope in avoiding placement at a juvenile correctional facility.

It takes a whole village to raise a child.  A team of mental health professionals greets each child upon their arrival, equipped to develop an individualized treatment plan tailored to each child’s specific needs.  While at the Village, children receive on-site clinical services provided by Childhelp’s MDT under the direction of a staff psychiatrist.  The children learn to love themselves and trust others through comprehensive treatment, including psychological, educational, recreational, music, art, occupational, and speech therapy.  The dedicated, highly-trained, and passionate staff of therapists, teachers, behavioral health specialists, nurses, physicians, and chaplain work to cultivate trust in children who have known only betrayal, and build self-esteem in the young souls who have rarely been given reason to like themselves.
