Position Summary
 
Childhelp, a premiere Short-Term Residential Treatment Facility and Group Home have been providing a healing home environment for severely abused, neglected, and at-risk children since 1978. The Orange County Group Homes of Childhelp are located in Costa Mesa, California and has immediate openings for Child Care Worker.  In this role, you will provide regular and consistent supervision for severely abused, neglected and at-risk children, and children with severe emotional and behavioral challenges. You will be responsible for direct supervision and behavior management of the children at all times. Producing a true home atmosphere, the Orange County Group Homes serve as many as 18 boys and girls ranging in age from 9 to 19 years.  As a Child Care Worker, your goal is to improve the quality of life and make a difference in the lives of the children under your direct care by providing a safe, nurturing environment. 

In addition, you will:
  • Provide regular and consistent supervision of all children under their care by providing a creative environment using appropriate limit setting and structuring techniques within the boundaries of Childhelp's standards.
  • Implement and institute daily routines for the house.  This includes evaluating house's structure and its' effectiveness.
  • Ensure the physical environment in the house meets the requirements as stated by management.  Maintain a safe, positive atmosphere for the children.  This includes cleaning, cooking and other housekeeping skills.
  • Implement and institute regular head count tours per policy.
  • Provide for the basic health needs of the children with the assistance of the Childhelp medical staff.  This includes providing proper medical care, teaching personal hygiene habits, diet, and general preventative health care.
  • Retain knowledge of the case history and the existing treatment plan for each child.  Possess the ability to provide input for the re-evaluation of each treatment plan through daily observational logging and quarterly documentation that is essential for formulating that plan.
  • Observe and record the children's daily activities and complete incident reports with objectivity.
  • Communicate measurable behavior objectives to the children and guide children toward successfully achieving the objectives.
  • Assist children to identify and overcome barriers that are interfering with learning and the ability to succeed in overcoming the barriers.
  • Possess the ability to identify children's needs and participate in the development and implementation of interventions for meeting them.  This encompasses areas such as:
  • Education: communicating with school, instituting individual homework plan, teaching, reading, etc.
  • Emotional growth: building self-esteem, increasing self-control by identifying feelings and coping skills to deal with them.  Relationship building and role modeling.
  • Social Skills: Manners, interaction with peers, and increasing community involvement.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.  
Minimum Requirements
  • The qualified candidate will have at least one of the following:
    • Bachelor of Arts or Science Degree, or
    • Valid Child Development Teaching Permit, or
    • Have at least 100 hours working with youth AND at least one of the following:
      • Completed 12 semester units of Early Childhood Education, Adolescent Development, or Foster and Kinship Care Education, or
      • Valid certificate as a Drug and/or Alcohol Counselor
    • Or, at least one year experience working as a staff or volunteer at a short-term residential treatment center
  • Successfully complete employer provided training and be certified in Pro-Act, First Aid/CPR
  • Must be available to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends
  • Must have a clear State of California Driver's License and the ability to pass a 3-tier background clearance

The Childhelp Merv Griffin Village is located in Beaumont, California.  Beaumont is 90 miles east of Los Angeles and 30 miles west of Palm Springs off Highway 10.  The Village has been providing a healing home environment for severely abused, neglected, and at-risk children since 1978.  Producing a true community atmosphere, the Village houses as many as 84 children ranging in age from 6 to 14 years old.  The residents live in cottages and are grouped by age and treatment needs.  The children arrive at the Village experiencing severe behavioral and emotional problems as a result of their previous abusive or neglectful situations.
